Personal Care Worker

Job Summary

A non-licensed individual providing supportive, person-centered assistance to clients in their homes to promote safety, independence and quality of life. PCW provides assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), companionship, and environmental support.

Qualifications:

Must be able to speak, read, write & communicate effectively in English and meet one of the following qualifications:

Satisfactory completion of a nursing education program preparing for RN/LPN licensure.
Satisfactory completion of a nurse aide education program approved by the VA Board of Nursing.
Have certification as a nurse aide issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Be successfully enrolled in a nursing education program preparing for RN or LPN licensure and have currently competed at least one nursing course that includes clinical experience involving direct client care.
Have satisfactorily passed a competency evaluation program that meets the criteria of 42 CFR 484.36(b). Home attendants of personal care services need only be evaluated on tasks in 42 CFR 484.36(b) as those tasks related to the personal care services to be provided; or
Have satisfactorily completed training using the “Personal Care Aide Training Curriculum”, 2003 edition, of the Department of Medical Assistance Services. This training is permissible for home attendants of personal care services only.
Must have current CPR certification.
Must pass criminal background check & drug screening.

Responsibilities:

Personal Services – assists with:

Bath (tub, shower or bed)
Oral hygiene
Grooming and care of hair
Ordinary care of nails
Routine skin care/ lotion massage
Positioning and turning of patents that cannot assist self- in bed and chair
Elimination
Assist with eating, dressing, walking and toileting
Remind client to take medications

Homemaking – assists with:

Meal planning and preparation in accordance with complex and modified diets
Feeding the client
Linen change (occupied and unoccupied)
Laundry, client’s only
Light housekeeping: washing dishes, clean kitchen, dust & vacuum, only those rooms the client uses
List needed supplies and grocery shopping
Administration of normally self-administered drugs as allowed by 54.1-3408 of the VA Drug Control Act
Follow universal precautions whenever giving any aspect of client service
Respond to the physical, emotional and development needs of clients
